Indiana's ports saw a 7 percent increase in cargo in 2009 due largely to more shipments of coal, grain, salt and steel. The ports on the Ohio River and Lake Michigan handled 7.2 million tons of cargo last year. The Mount Vernon port along the Ohio River saw its highest tonnage in 15 years.
